The UPSC CPAF refers to the "Civil Services Preliminary Examination" (CSE Prelims) for the Indian Civil Services, which includes the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) as part of the preliminary exams. CPAF stands for "Civil Services Preliminary Examination and Aptitude Test". 


The UPSC CSE is a competitive examination for recruitment into various civil services of the Indian government. The exam is conducted in two stages:

Selection process:

The selection process for the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is multi-stage and involves the following:


1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims):

   - General Studies Paper I: Tests knowledge of current events, history, geography, politics, etc.

   - Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) Paper II: Tests analytical and logical reasoning, comprehension, and decision-making skills. 


   The Prelims are qualifying in nature, meaning you need to achieve a minimum cutoff to be eligible for the Mains examination.

2. Main Examination (Mains):

   - Optional Subject Papers: Two papers based on the optional subject chosen by the candidate.


   The Mains exam is descriptive and tests the depth of knowledge and understanding of various subjects.


3. Interview/Personality Test:

   - This stage assesses the candidate’s personality, communication skills, and overall suitability for a career in civil services.


4. Final Merit List:

   - Based on the total marks obtained in the Mains and Interview/Personality Test, a final merit list is prepared. Candidates are selected and allocated to various services based on their rank and preferences.
